1) How many of these do you eat on a consistent basis? What harm is caused by eating the dirty foods?
2) Were you surprised at the lists?
3) What can we do to eat better/have less pesticides in food?
4) If this is what we are eating what are people in less fortunate countries eating? More or less pesticide?

This is my weekly post,
ReplyDeleteI was quite alarmed while reading this article because both myself and my family consistently eat almost all the foods found on the dirty dozen list and only a few on the clean fifteen. One thing I noticed was the produce listed under the dirty dozen was cheaper than that of the ones under the clean fifteen, because they are genetically modified. Although many people think the GMO foods are harmless to humans, they can have a large effect. One of the reasons so many people have allergies today is suspected to be caused by the consumption of GMO foods. There is a concern over an increased toxicity in plant, usually the plants that humans consume produce toxin at too low of level to be dangerous. GMOs could possible supercharge these toxins making them dangerous for human consumption. Lastly, GMO foods have a lower nutritional value so foods people think they are eating to gain nutrients actually aren’t.
I was surprised by the list; I didn’t realize that so many popular fruits and vegetables could possibly be bad for you. There are tons of ways to eat better and have fewer pesticides in your food. You can just google “how to avoid buying GMO foods” and it will give you tips, which is exactly what I did. The first tip is to buy organic, most products will be labeled saying with they are organic or made with organic ingredients. The next tip is to look for non-GMO project seals, I’m not sure if we have this in Canada or not because while working in grocery store I’ve never seen anything like it but it’s a good idea anyway. The last tip is to avoid at-risk ingredients such as sugar and dairy products. Products derived from the eight top GMO crops; corn, soybeans, canola, cottonseed, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, some zucchini, and yellow squash. I feel like people in less fortunate countries could be eating food with less pesticides especially in places such as Africa where food comes straight off small poor family farms and to market to be sold.

Yes, Anneli I was shocked too to find that most of the produce that I eat the most was on the dirty dozen list. I mean, there were lots on the clean list too, but some of the fruits and veggies that my family eats the most are on that list. This is concerning too because I am likely not the only one, and seeing as these fruits could contain deadly chemical residue but be the most commonly purchased is scary to think. Our demand for lots of an item, at a low price is likely why so much of the produce is contaminated.
