12.3 We are all monkeys

This article, along with the NBA sanctions put on the LA Clippers owner, shows how racism is alive and well in an age that is supposed to be accepting of all people.  It goes to show how difficult it can be for minorities to make it in their field whether it is sports, business, education whatever.  Read and think:
1) How would you react in a situation like this?
2) Was Alves' reaction good, bad, not necessary, too exaggerated?  Your thoughts.
3) The support he is receiving is showing what to the world?
4) How do the sanctions put on the man who threw the banana and the LA Clipper owner sit with you?  Justified?

12.2 Something different is blooming this spring

This article was written a while ago but it is a problem that is growing in our Great Lakes; especially lake Erie because it is so shallow and the algae stops the light from penetrating to the bottom of the lake.
1) Why is this a world issue?  Why should we be worried?
2) What can be done about this issue?
3) How does this affect you?
4) What can you do to help this issue?

12.1 Mexico's plan

Here is an article that shows how a newly industrialized country is trying to do its part for the Earth. Or are they?
1) Do you think they will reach their goal? Why? Why not?
2) Why would a country put a law into place that it knows it cannot meet?
3) Have other countries done this poorly?  How does Canada stand on their promises?
4) What should/can be done about this situation?

AND here is the pledge they commited to making.  Look at some other countries to compare how they are doing.

11.1 Week 11 already; time flies when you're having fun

This week is a little different.  Everyone will find a short video to post and people will comment on it.  Could be a music video, short documentary, TED talk, etc. As long as it shows a world issue and isn't too graphic (remember this is a school based learning platform).  Give a small description like the one below to intro the video.  Have fun!
A good site to check out is: http://www.filmsforaction.org/ and if you find one that is too long but fits perfectly then try to find the trailer for it and post that maybe?

I will start it off with this music video by Modest Mouse who were friends with the late Heath Ledger.  In fact Heather Ledger directed this video (he came up with the idea for the video) and it was almost complete when he passed away.  It shows how whaling and meat production in general can be very cruel to animals and what if the tables were turned and WE were the ones being hunted?  Also it is a little graphic so if you can't finish watching it don't worry.  Enjoy.

10.4 Brazil's Fight Against Monsanto

Looks like it takes deep pockets to fight Monsanto and the government of Brazil is ready to go to war with them to protect it's peoples' health but who will it hurt?
1) Why are so many countries stepping up to stop Monsanto's products?
2) How do you feel about the decisions these countries are making?
3) Who is most affected by these decisions? Will this hurt the poor farmer in these poor countries?
4) What implications could this have on Canada?

10.3 Trying to eat healthy is hard to do.

When big companies are in charge of our food and big money is at the root of all decisions are we really getting the best from those companies?
Read this food article and think:
1) What is the bottom line for all companies?  How does that affect us?
2) How much does marketing have an affect in people's purchases?
3) What are some positives/negatives of buying from big companies?
4) How can you eat more healthily?  Do you buy the groceries or pay for them?

10.2 We could go to war against Russia

W

Wow, so Stephen Harper is saying that if the Ukraine called on Canada to help them in their fight against Russia we would go.  Our troops just pulled out of Afghanistan and now could be headed to the Ukraine.  It seems as though things are heating up over there and could escalate quickly.
1) Do you agree we should support the Ukraine?
2) Why would Harper say we would join the fight?
3) What is this fight over? Land? Oil? Something Bigger?
4) Why is Putin trying to "turn back time"?

10.1 Potato/Patato?

GMOs are all around us.  Check out this article and think:
1) Is this good?  Why?
2) Why is it allowed in the US but not the UK?  Is this good? Why?
3) Why do you think that researchers would not be allowed to taste the potatoes?
4) How could this help world hunger?

9.5 BP still making news

Just when you thought it was over, the mess, the money payout, everything.  Now more bad news for the BP oil spill.  Read and think:
1) What kind of chemicals were they using to clean up this mess that caused the workers to be so sick?
2) If it is making people sick what is it doing to marine life?
3) How much money is BP willing to put into this mess?  Sounds like a lot of buying people off instead of going to court.
4) How could we prevent this from happening again?

9.4 How else am I supposed to buy a $6 sweater?

I was shopping at Zehrs a couple of years ago and spotted a nice bright green sweater for $6.  Two good a deal to pass up and it fit nicely too boot.  Read this article and think;

1) Where do your clothes come from?
2) What conditions do you think the factory workers are facing everyday at work?
3) How does it make you feel to wear clothes made in a sweatshop?
4) What can be done about this situation?

9.3 Got Milk? or is it Got Modiefied Milk Ingredients?

I love Chocolate Milk and when my wife pointed out the carton in the fridge was actually labelled Chocolate Dairy Beverage I was very upset.  Read this article and think:
1) What dairy product is in my fridge right now that is not really made with milk? Check and see.
2) Who controls this and why did it change without our warning?
3) Which one do you think it tastes better?  Would you be willing to pay more for real milk?
4) What are the harms, if any?

9.2 Meatless Mondays

As a family we try to do one meal a week that is vegetarian.  One it is good for us and two it is good for the environment.  If it was up to my wife we would eat much less meat but I really like it and need the protein to keep me going.  Here is an article that shows the impact meat and meat production has on our Earth.
Read and think:
1) What part of your ecological footprint was taken up by food and meat especially?
2) How difficult of a change would it be to switch to a vegetarian diet completely?  For you and for the world?
3) Why do we have this love for meat?
4) Could this be a win-win situation?

9.1 You are what you eat

My wife is big on this:  The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen.  These are fruits and vegetables that contain the most and least amount of pesticides.  Look through the article and lists and think:
1) How many of these do you eat on a consistent basis? What harm is caused by eating the dirty foods?
2) Were you surprised at the lists?
3) What can we do to eat better/have less pesticides in food?
4) If this is what we are eating what are people in less fortunate countries eating?  More or less pesticide?

8.5 A whale of a tale

Some people eat beef, some eat whale.  If there is enough why can't we hunt a few.  These are two lines from another article that I found that deal with the recent ruling against the Japanese whale hunt.  Read this article and think:

1) How do you feel about this issue?
2) Why would Australia raise this legal issue against Japan?
3) How will this ruling affect Japan?
4) Do you think this will stop/slow down the whaling that goes on in the world?

8.4 Woah!

My hope is to get to this type of stuff later in the semester and this is just to juicy to pass up.  The US has deliberately set up a twitter type program in Cuba to create conflict and try to oust the government in power.  Wowsers!
1) If they did it in Cuba where else could they do this?
2) What does the US have to gain from this?
3) Why would they do this?
4) How does this make you feel about the American style of governing?

8.3 The solution to pollution is dilution

ocean garbage patch

The crash of Malaysian flight 370 is devastating and one thing making the search efforts even more difficult is spotting airplane debris among all the trash that is floating around the globe.
Read and think:
1) Where does this trash come from?
2) What can you do to help/prevent?
3) Who is directly impacted by this trash?
4) Who's responsibility is this to clean up?

8.2 Food Inc

vs
I hope to watch the Food Inc documentary in class but it might turn me off food for a while.  Here is an interesting article about the loss of food diversity.  Check it out

1) What are you thoughts?
2) What can we do?
3) “Now, we can get strawberries year round, which look beautiful and taste of nothing,” How does that make you feel?
4)  “the privileged among us would pay an economic price for that lack of planning and prioritising through higher food cost, but the poor would pay for it with their lives.” How does this make you feel?

8.1 Environment...it's not that big a deal

Soon we will be heading into the environment and we will be talking about exactly this and this article is huge.  A little long but what it talks about will be historic.
1) What are your thoughts?
2) Research and tell me what findings they are using to get these results?
3) What do the graphs/maps mean?
