15.4 Oops

Here is a prime example of the effects humans are having on the earth.  Think:
1) What can I do about this?
2) Why is Mr. Lahaie teaching us about this?
3) This is just old hippies over-reacting, isn't it?
4) Why do you care about this?  Does it affect you in anyway?

Turn it in back open

I have reopened turnitin for those who still have to hand in their ISUs and it will close at 8pm tonight.  I have not determined what the late penalty will be yet.  I will let you know.  Keep in mind at college or university the mark for a late submission is zero!

15.3 We live in a beautiful but messed up world

This is something that just goes to show how lucky we are to live in Canada.  It shows how different some peoples' lives are compared to ours.  Imagine falling in love and being killed by your own parents because of it.  I know you may have had some relationships where your parents were not too keen on your choice of friend but this takes it to a new level.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/pakistan-stoning-kills-pregnant-daughter-who-married-for-love-1.2656544
1) Is this another case of women's rights not being safeguarded?
2) Do you think this happens more than we think?  Not necessarily a killing but at least a break-up caused by the parents?
3) If you were to be sold off into marriage (man or woman) how would you react?  How do you think the other party feels too?
4) Does somebody need to step in here and tell them this is not right or is their religious/cultural right to act this way?

15.2 I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike

This week is Bike week and I don't mean that gangs of Harleys are going to be tearing into town.  I mean the good ol'fashioned bicycle.
 http://www.thebarrieexaminer.com/2014/05/26/barrie-bike-week-kick-off-wheels-home-some-very-good-points

1) You may have no choice but when you do do you bike instead of using your vehicle?  Why? and Why do you have no choice?
2) How could we make Barrie a better cycling city?
3) What environmental impacts can this have on our community?
4) Which of the 4Rs does this mostly fall into?

15.1 It's been a while

We got a break from posting last week and now we are backat'er.  It has also been a while since we talked about the Ukraine crisis.  Here's an article that talks about the growing concerns happening over there and how the newly elected president is taking no guff from anybody.  He has shown he is a firm leader so far.
1) Which side are you on?  Russian, Ukrainian or Seperatist Rebels? Why?
2) Who is going to win? Why?
3) Why would the president turn down help from the US and EU?
4) What could be a possible consequence from all of this fighting?

14.5 What would you do?

Maybe it is you, maybe it is your child, your parent, your friend, either way you seem them suffering from the harsh chemicals designed to fight cancer and think there must a better way.  What would you do?  Would you follow white man's rules and use their drugs?  Or would you use your traditional medicine and ancient teachings to treat the disease?  Read and think:

1) Does the government have the right to tell this family how to treat their child?
2) Does CAS (an agency designed to help kids and the agency that had a large impact in the residential school system) have the right to take this child away from her parents?
3) What would you do? Chemo or traditional medicine?
4) How is this a world issue?

14.4 Resource Extraction is all about...

Is it about rights? Is it about the land? Is it about the money?  Read this article and think:
1) Who truly owns this land?
2) How far back in history do we have to go?  Shouldn't we just move forward from here?
3) Forget about history and look at today.  Who owns the rights to these lands?  Canadian citizens?  Does that include/exclude Natives?  Shouldn't we all benefit from the resource profits?
4) Why is this case so important?

14.3 Flooding and safe waters concerns

A few years ago people died on this reserve because the water was so contaminated with sewage.  The government was notified and did very little to help.  Now with constant flooding in the area it seems as though the problem is still persistent.
1) Should they move them or not? What would be effects of a move?
2) How is this related to large hydroelectric dams in the area?
3) Imagine if this happened in a non-reserve area?  What would be the reaction by the government?  Any different?
4) Would you ever go to a northern, fly-in, reserve and work or live there?  Why or why not?
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/kaschechewan-flooding-costs-government-millions-year-after-year-1.2641039

14.2 Ethical Treatment of Natives

It seems as though animals get better treatment in this country than the native people.  Check out this article.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/manitoba-first-nation-leaders-hope-un-report-will-prompt-action-1.2640076

1) How would you feel if this was your group that was being treated like this?
2)$100 million was given to the native people to fix the residential school problems.  $100 million was also given to the dwindling horse racing industry.  Seem fair?
3) What are the difficulties facing the native people today?
4) 85% of Manitoba inmates are Native.  Seem fair?

14.1 Native Canadian Issues

This week I on the blog I hope to get five articles regarding the state of the Canadian Indian and their quality of life in a Canada.  This article will start us off.
1) Why is this a world issue?
2) How does it make you feel to be a Canadian and to be known worldwide as oppressors to our own people?
3) What are some of the conditions?  How did they get this way?
4) What effects does this have on the Indian people of Canada and their society?

13.5 All Natural no longer

Looks like that guy from that PR company we saw in class did his job because Kashi Products (a division of Kellogg) is removing it's NATURAL label from some of its products because they are not considered natural products and are facing a lawsuit for it.

1) What is more important your health or your money?
2) Is this a world issue?
3) How can you avoid falling into the Natural trap?
4) If this is happening with food what other lies are we being fed?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/kellogg-to-drop-all-natural-label-from-kashi-products-1.2636051

13.4 Bees

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/overwintering-losses-are-a-significant-concern-when-it-comes-to-bees/26118/

People have tried to estimate the amount of money that bees save the world with their pollinating powers and the estimate is in the trillions of dollars a year.  The loss of bees is crucial as we are dependent on them for survival.  Read and think:
1) What secondary impacts could this have?
2) What would a complete collapse of bees in Canada do to us?
3) What can we do to prevent the loss of bees?
4) Globally how significant of an issue is this?

13.3 The wheels on the bus go round and round...

A local article that shows the difficulties our community faces in mass transportation.  If this was Europe or Asia it wouldn't be an issue because their systems are so much more advanced/elaborate than ours.  However, this is the reality of North America; a car driven society that thinks about convenience for drivers before public transfer.
Read and think:
1) What caused this problem in the first place?
2) How can we fix it?
3) What other problems does this create for Barrie or Canada or the world?
4) Why is Europe and Asia so much better at this than us?
