This week is a little different. Everyone will find a short video to post and people will comment on it. Could be a music video, short documentary, TED talk, etc. As long as it shows a world issue and isn't too graphic (remember this is a school based learning platform). Give a small description like the one below to intro the video. Have fun!

I will start it off with this music video by Modest Mouse who were friends with the late Heath Ledger. In fact Heather Ledger directed this video (he came up with the idea for the video) and it was almost complete when he passed away. It shows how whaling and meat production in general can be very cruel to animals and what if the tables were turned and WE were the ones being hunted? Also it is a little graphic so if you can't finish watching it don't worry. Enjoy.

ReplyDeleteThe nine-minute short film for M.I.A.’s “Born Free” was banned by YouTube, despite positive critical reception. In the graphic video, directed by Romain Gavras, red-headed adolescents are rounded up and executed, with bodies exploding into the finale this video was meantto show the hardships and discrimination peoplewith red hair faced however it just sparked alot of ethical debates.

Don't know how well I really understood the full message of the video, but genocide is fairly common around the world and this was an interesting take on what one in America might look like.

Very Interesting Video. As Trevor said it seems to me like a type of genocide that could potentially happen in The USA. As far as ethical debates goes, I think the video depicts how some military and rebel forces deal with threats and how explosive and brutal the attacks can be,

I know this video is too long (16 minutes) but even if you just watch up to 10 minutes its pretty interesting and Paul Gilden explains how much of the Earth's resources the world's population is using up everyday and what the consequences will be if this continues.
I liked this video in how he did not bombard the audience with statistic upon statistic to prove global warming because he said the evidence is everywhere, which i think we can all agree on because we know that there are facts and consequences it is now just about acting. I liked how he said that in order for society to do something about it we have to make global warming into an economic issue too.

DeleteThis is just a video showing the effects of climate change on the icebergs. It was really lucky of these researchers to capture this. I think this documentary is on Netflix. I watched it a while ago and it was interesting all of the way through, so I suggest if people are interested in this they watch Chasing Ice.

I thought that this video was pretty cool. I liked the reference to Manhattan, that although the ice in the video appeared small, the glaciers were actually like 6 times the height of the tallest buildings of Manhattan. The rate at which we are causing our climate to change compared to the past is also concerning. Good video.
DeleteI went and saw the film at the Barrie film festival last year is it was really good, its one of the only films that visually shows the current impacts in which are occurring in our environment, due to human caused global warming.

This is a really fascinating video, Ruth. We typically consider sites that offer free memberships (like Facebook, Twitter, etc) to be a privilege but what we don't realize is what these private cooperations are doing with the information we're releasing. It does make me kind of want to see the full documentary in order to get a further glimpse into how all the information on our social media profiles are being handled.

As the trailer said, and I'm sure the documentary will go into more depth, dieting is generally a bad idea and chews up roughly $60 Billion dollars a year in the USA. The best diet you can do for yourself is change your lifestyle and eating habits. Easy things like portion control and exercise are key. Anyway, take a look! and ENJOY!

Really interesting video, Adrian. Dieting companies like Jenny Craig always raised skepticism in me because I couldn't wrap my head around how substitutes of our favourite guilty pleasure foods would help us lose weight and benefit our health but this trailer really justified how our entire mentality on dieting thanks to the media is flawed. I think I'm going to look into the full documentary just because I'm curious to see how these once obese/sick individuals changed their lives just by eating organic/natural foods and taking care of their bodies.

As I've said in almost all of the other blogs about food, I don't understand how people think that diet foods with so many artificial sugars and GMOs are better than eating enough of the foods that were put on this earth for us to eat. I love how the video focuses both on people living an unhealthy lifestyle and unmasking the diet companies for what they really are. I'm definitely going to try to get a hold on this movie to watch.

The clip above may only be just over a minute in length but I still find the message behind it to be extremely powerful. It truly puts into perspective what life would be like if we didn’t live in a world rooted in hatred and bigotry. Granted, human rights movements have collectively advanced throughout the last century thanks to the many visionaries featured in this video, but imagine what more could have been accomplished if they weren’t killed solely because of their progressive ideals. I know this isn’t an innovative concept to anyone since we’re often preached to not bully others and be open-minded. However, I don’t think this is a message that could ever reach overexposure.

I'm not sure if all of the innovations for peace we have today would have happened if these people hadn't of died but its also really interesting and sad to think about of the great things these people could have done for the world. This video is about the Alberta oil sands. In a short three minutes it shows the economical and the environmental impacts. There is certainly a positive impact, temporarily for the economy, but astonishingly more significant environmental impacts. In my opinion the environmental impacts ominously out weigh the temporary economic benefits. I don't believe the oil sands should be permitted to expand and consumers should be forced to reduce their dependency to fossil fuel energy.
This video really does show how devastating the oil sands are on our environment. The video shows good information from both sides of the argument, but the damage this does to our globe is horrifying. Great video!

ReplyDeleteThe video I chose to post this week was an interview with Malala Yousafzai, a 16 year old Pakistani girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for supporting women's rights for education. Luckily she survived to share to the world her story of the need to educate women. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013, and is considered a hero to women around the world. This is an awesome video! It's absolutely inspiring to see this one girl represent and stand up for such a large group of girls. I'm am a huge advocate for education so it's really nice to see how Malala is doing so much to keep hers. As much as we complain about going to school, we have to realize how lucky we are to be so educated. I do know that the Social Justice Club has been raising money for a few years to build a school and hope that would also help. We need to realize that education can resolve so many problems that happen in the world today.

This week, my friend introduced me to this video and the message was so powerful and disturbing that I began crying the first time I saw it. This is a music video by the Irish singer/songwriter Hozier. In the video, it follows the life of a gay couple who are oppressed and tortured when their community learns about their sexuality. Many relate this video to the current violence against the lesbian, gay and transgender community in Russia. Although it is very apparent that these types of things happen in Russia, many people are unaware that this type of homophobia is seen all over the world. To me, this type of prejudice is unacceptable. In the past, we've seen similar oppression against many other races and religions, and it is just a matter of time that this issue is addressed. No matter who they are, I think everyone should be treated with equal amounts of respect and dignity.

The people in the video comment on how Golden Dawn seems to have infiltrated the country's police force, allowing members of the party to get away with public assault on immigrants and anti-fascist individuals in front of the police themselves. Watching this video made me very angry, knowing about all the injustices that are going on in Greece.

ReplyDeleteHere is a Ted Talk about the issue of robots taking our jobs, it's not that much of an issue right now but as technology improves, as the video highlights, less and less jobs will require human workers. Sad to say considering the expensive cost of living and the increasing rates of poverty world wide. I think it's crazy that people used to view the idea of robots "ruling" the Earth insane, and now it's a reality that at times can be very scary. So here ya go :)

I stumbled across this video earlier this week and found it very interesting and powerful. I believe that poetry is a great median for discussing issues in today's society. I found this video on the Button Poetry channel and it discusses how prejudice still takes place in today's society, it countries that we deem "socially developed". Prejudice and discrimination are sadly all still issues in today's day in age and societal issues (how humans interact with one another) has a huge impact on the world and society that we build for ourselves.

I think that this video accurately shows how skilled some of the members are and ow they are able to even hack news networks like Fox. It also proves that anonymous will not be pushed aside and that they will fight for what the group believes in and use their vast amount of followers to do so
