10.2 We could go to war against Russia

W

Wow, so Stephen Harper is saying that if the Ukraine called on Canada to help them in their fight against Russia we would go.  Our troops just pulled out of Afghanistan and now could be headed to the Ukraine.  It seems as though things are heating up over there and could escalate quickly.
1) Do you agree we should support the Ukraine?
2) Why would Harper say we would join the fight?
3) What is this fight over? Land? Oil? Something Bigger?
4) Why is Putin trying to "turn back time"?

I always have a hard time understanding why some nations such as the united stated go and fight someone else's war. I personally don't think that it is our responsibility to support another nations issues with force. We also have to consider that Canada as a nation is friends and not the enemies of either country, and this could cause problems for Canada in the long run.

With all this being said, after this post was uploaded Canada decided to send fighter jets to eastern Europe on a NATO mission on Thursday. Harper decided to send 6 CF-18 Hornets, and according to CTV News Harper said this was "in response to a NATO request". I don't understand why the Prime Minister would want to join this fight, because I dont see any benefit for Canada in this.

To answer the question of what the fight is over, i dont really know if there is a correct answer. There may not be a meaning to Putin's actions, but from what we know from the media, this is a war over land. But, who knows about the different biases and propaganda in the media that we are listening to.

I personally do not understand the purpose of this war Putin has against the Ukraine, and I also don't understand why Canada is getting involved.

    2. It should possibly be considered that personal gain is not Canada's sole motivation in supporting the US and the West in this hypothetical war (though there's always something to gain from fighting in a war, be it for the nation's entire population or only for a select few). Even just in terms of image, "it's not my problem" would probably not be a great stance to take on an international issue such as this one.

I believe that Canada should go and defend the Ukraine, this is because we are allies, and should support them in case Canada would ever need their support. In the same breath Canada could be making enemies that could effect them in the future.

Harper said we should join the fight because he wants to send reinforcement to our ally. Another reason Harper may have wanted to send Canadian Military out there may be because Russia and its over-powering military is taking advantage of a much smaller weaker country.

It is a bigger issue, the issue seems to be that the Ukrainian President turned down a single economic deal with the European Union in regards to association agreement. Just hours after protesters took to the streets of Ukraine's capital to share their opposing opinions on the Presidents decisions.

    1. Honestly I do agree with you that Canada should go to help Ukraine but I do not think that going with the military is such a good idea. We need to figure out how to solve our problems without violence. I don't think adding more violence into the picture is the answer. We need to find some sort of political resolution so we don't put our country in danger as well.
