7.1 If the black box is indestructible why isn't the whole plane made of it?

What a tragedy this is...imagine not knowing where your family members are for such a long period of time and not knowing the cause of the disappearance.  Truly sad.
1) Why is this a world issue?
2) Why are so many countries getting involved? Like Australia why do they care?
3) What does this do to the flying industry and people's perception of flying?
4) Is there something hidden here?  Missing information that is being withheld?
Read and post if you like.

  1. This is my post for the week,

When i originally heard the news about this missing flight i must admit i was a little suspicious. With today's technology, i found it very hard to believe that a plane with over 200 people could simply " go off the radar". This is a world issue because the Malaysian government made it that way with its sub par search efforts and information given to the media and family of the victims. The rest of the world saw this as wrong and decided to help persuade Malaysia to increase their efforts and communication. I believe other country's are getting involved because they want to get to the bottom of this mystery and find out what happened so they can possibly avoid this devastating situation in the future. I think this incident will not deter many from flying because this type of thing is very rare, however if someone had a fear of terrorism or flying in general this would effect them much more. I think their could be some form of covering up, in this article this Malaysian pilot gives his reasons of why he thinks it is a cover up by the government. In case you didn't guess this pilot has since been suspended by the government.

    1. Nick,
I agree at the beginning i was a little skeptical too. It seems weird but shockingly it is very possible for an aircraft to go off the radar. The Malaysians have had a hard time with this investigation that is true and i agree i think other nations want to know what happened. You made good points and i agree with your thoughts.

This truly is a sad situation and a devastation for the families that are involved. My heart goes out to them. As a pilot I find this news all the more sad.

I think that this is a world issue because of the amount of lives lost and the fact no one really knows whats happened. It is the element of surprise that is making this news. Other news doesn't last this long because people tend to know the cause of the accident rather than it being a mystery that makes it pop up on the news again and again.

I think so many countries are getting involved for multiple reasons. Firstly the sheer size of the area they are looking in to try and find the airplane takes a lot of people, and the world needs to come together to help look for this aircraft. This investigation may also be too big for the Malaysians to handle so they may need to call in someone like the NTSB who posess greater skill. Also i think other countries get involved because they know that this is a sad story and they are doing their parts to try and do anything they can to help. Australia in particular because they are so close to the area, possess a strong military to help and are a good nation trying to do their part to help.

Ultimately as a pilot I cant see this having a long lasting effect on air travel. Daily millions of people need to get around the world and they choose air travel, and this wont change that. Flying is one of the safest modes of transportation in the world, and the aircraft that was involved in this accident, the Boeing 777 is the safest built passenger jet in the world. This wont change peoples perception of flying, and shouldn't scare them considering how safe flying is.

Lastly yes i do believe there may be something hidden here. Especially at first. There were things that they weren't telling the media and it caused confusion. I think now the problem is the investigation authorities simply don't know whats happened and that is causing even more confusing and distress.

It is a tragedy that so many innocent victims were killed in what seems to be some sort of act of terrorism, or unlikely mechanical failure. Malaysian aircraft that went down in the Indian ocean is a world issue for a couple of reasons. The first reason is also the most obvious, there were passengers on the plane from other countries around world. The second reason is as Nick said, the Malaysian government put forth a rather weak search effort for the plane, so other countries felt the need to step in and help out the victim's families who were still clinging to the slim chance of their loved ones still being alive. The third reason is,if this is seen as a possible act of terrorism, news stations and newspapers spread the word like a virus.

I believe other countries got involved for to reasons. They felt bad for the families of the innocent victims that went missing in the incident, and the possibility of it being an act of terrorism. In this situation it is best to put yourself in the shoes of the people who lost their loved ones, so you get a feeling of what it feels like, and i think that's what these countries around the world did. If they were in that situation themselves they would hope somebody would reach out a helping hand in their direction, so that is what they did for them. Also, it is apparent that terrorism is a worldwide issue, so when there is a possible act of terrorism at large, many countries like to extend their knowledge and help in order to stop/slow down terrorism around the world.

Personally, this incident doesnt affect my view on flying, I still enjoy it and would like to continue flying in the future. But, I do know that many people who were already uneasy about flying for miscellaneous reasons now have one more unlikely, but very realistic risk of flying to worry about. This may lead to many people changing their view on flying.

This article gives a number of theories on how the Malaysian flight may have ended up somewhere in the Indian Ocean.
