7.2 Ebola...what?

So this isn't biology class but still interesting enough and there were reports that a man in Saskatchewan could possibly have this virus (which turned out to be false) but this is an issue because it could possibly affect global travel, economics and population.  I mean this could be a way to help the population control its numbers.  Anyway, read and think about this:
1) How does this impact the world?
2) Why is this virus prevalent in areas known to be poor economically and with high population growth rates?  Is there a correlation?
3) What can we do to help people in this situation?
4) How would you react if this was found in our area?

  1. This is my weekly post:
This article is about the Ebola virus; a fatal disease causing high fever, internal and external bleeding and many other symptoms. This disease first emerged in the 70s, but the big outbreak occurred in the 90s killing 245 people, mainly in the Republic of Congo. Now, the disease has re-emerged and re-appeared in the media because over 50 deaths in Guinea have been related to the virus.
This is an issue that impacts the whole world mainly because this virus is fatal and contagious. It can be transmitted through the transfer of bodily fluids. This means that even though the disease is only present in Guinea now, it can soon be transferred to other people in different countries. This would put pressure on the health care system and will very quickly erupt into a world issue that would need a quick solution. This reminds me a lot of the SARS outbreak. It first occurred in China and spread across the world as people began travelling with the disease.
This virus is most prevalent in areas with a high population growth rates with low economic stability. The virus is contagious so it is much more likely for a virus to be spread in a dense population because as the population increases the sanitation system is harder to control and the spread of germs becomes much more frequent and hard to stop. Also, the poor economic situation makes it difficult to find cures for the disease, decreases the effectiveness of the healthcare system and makes it difficult to provide sanitary areas which increases the risk of developing disease.
In this situation, I think the best way to help the country is to provide them with the proper sanitation methods and health care to beat the virus. As a country with advanced technology and healthcare, it is our duty to provide this technology in order to find solutions to this deadly virus. Similarly to the approach with the SARS virus outbreak, we also need to isolate these people with this virus so it cannot spread anymore. This means isolating the infected in the hospital but also avoiding the spread by refusing for sick people to travel.
If the virus was found in our area, those solutions would be the main priority of the country. They would have to stop the spreading of the disease before it infects the majority of the population. Since we have the access to the technology to do so, I would believe that the solution would be found much faster if it affected Canada.

Here are the links I used. One of them described the SARS outbreak and the second is more information about the Ebola virus:

  2. this is my weekly post...
this artical is about a very dangerous virus that has a death rate of 90%. right now it currently in africa and this could potentially affect the amount of global travel because people will not want to go somewhere that there is a possible chance of getting a deadly illness. this impacts the world because now we are going to have to start doing more medical research since there is no known cure to this virus and that could globally cost us lots of money. it is terrible knowing that developing countries and countries that are not as well off as us dont have the same access to medical care as we do. the only thing that we are able to do to help out with this situation is to give them some of our medical technology or invest some money into helping find a cure or vaccine for the virus.
