16.1 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Economy or Environment? A lot of times you have to choose one or the other.  The EPA is now saying that if you choose the environment it will benefit the economy too.  Read and think:
1) How could this benefit Canada?
2) Why is this important for the world?
3) What is the equivalent agency in Canada to the EPA?  What is our policy on the environment?
4) Who could be held responsible if they don't meet their target level?  What consequences would they face? http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/u-s-carbon-dioxide-limits-touted-by-epa-as-economically-wise-1.2661784

  1. This is my weekly post:
I was extremely impressed and exited to hear that the US is finally making their impact on the environment a priority to change. Hopefully they are committed to their goal and will attain it.
This could benefit Canada in many ways. First, this initiative informs Canadians that it is possible for change to happen and empowers us to make a change ourselves. As we see the States improve, it gives us a glimmer of hope that Canada could do the same. Also, because Canada does a lot of trade with American companies, this reduction in greenhouse gases could rub off on the canadian consumers. More carbon friendly products will be offered and as this business grows the prices for these products can become more reasonable.
This is important for the world for very similar regions. In other parts of the world, the US is known as a leading country. A lot of trends that happen around the world actually start in the US. Also, the United States do a lot of trade and has a large consumer base. As countries see that the US is trying to make a change, they could be inspired to do so as well. Also, as the US demands for more green products, the international industries are forced to sell these green products to make a larger profit.
From what I understand, Environment Canada is our version of the EPA. Environment Canada makes policies and regulations that involve the environment but these are not always respected. The way I see it, Environment Canada does try to protect our environment but the main priority for Canadians is earning money. After reading some of their policies, the environment often plays second fiddle to the economy.
Personally, I think that every american would be responsible if they don't meet their target levels. As a country, they made this goal so if they fail, I think that very citizen has a bit of responsibility. The main consequence would obviously be the environmental affects of greenhouse gases. In the future we could definitely understand what that means. Also, I am assuming that the government could fine certain companies that do not participate in reducing greenhouse gases. Honestly though, I think their goal is reasonable and they can definitely do it.
