2.5 Manufacturing Consent

Ok so we saw this in class and I want you to see it again as it is pretty important.  Edward Bernays and Noam Chomsky both said that democracy is in trouble without as it can be hacked with Manufactured Consent.  Watch the video and comment:
1) Do you agree that democracy is in trouble without manufactured consent?  Explain.
2) Who is at the helm when it comes to putting ideas in our heads? Should we trust them?
3) What can we do so that we are in the 20% not the 80%
4) Is 20-80 good or should we make it more 50-50?  Explain.

PS if you didn't get to see this video you should see it too.  Don't worry so much about the Monsanto stuff as we will talk about them a lot later.  Focus on the actual reporters and how they have to do their job.

  1. Although I have already made my weekly post, I saw the movie "Robo Cop" today and it portrayed this idea repetitively (but don’t worry I won’t spoil it!)
The “story" was told from a 3rd person view, following most of the characters, but the producers kept relating back to a certain news castor. What struck me was how much Bias he was casting out into the "public". The organization that had originally produced this "Robocop" did so for their own benefit, not for society, or even really the police officer’s benefit, but yet the news castor was portraying him as a cop that could improve the safety of the nation, and yet was still human. The problem was that it was all false. This was what the creators wanted, to benefit them politically, but yet they had removed everything human from him to do so. It was manipulation. Luckily, there were good guys too.
The point is without "the good guys" or the educated portion society would have likely believed this biased news castor and manipulated message, leaving a corrupted view, a manipulated vote, and the wrong choice from a third person view. So, this movie has once again said to me that we should be always filtering through the news for bias, the manipulation of truth, and guarding our own opinion from the corrupt messages from those with corrupted motives and the power to put out false information, or manipulated stories.

  2. This is my weekly post. I found these videos very interesting. Although the general idea behind it is frightening. Now knowing that much of the information we absorb through the media could be false, this makes one think. There are so many things we encounter in our daily lives that could be full of harmful toxins or people taking advantage of uniformed citizens. I think the best way to figure out what is true and what is not, is to conduct your own research, from multiple sources, that have different perspectives. If we are able to look at all the sides and pull the true facts and piece them together, we would end up with a much more transparent society. This would allow us to buy safer healthier products and elect honest people with morals and good intentions.

  3. Michael you need to back up your opinion with a source. Next time do some research and add an article.
